Barrie is a city located in central Ontario, Canada, on the western shore of Lake Simcoe. It is approximately 90 km (56 mi) north of Toronto, Ontario. It is within the Simcoe County Region of the Greater Golden Horseshoe’s regional planning area. Barrie serves as the economic and administrative hub for the area commonly referred to as Simcoe County. It is named for Sir Robert Barrie who was the Admiral 20-gun sloop HMS Barracouta.

The city of Barrie was founded in 1833 when William Barr, an Englishman from Devon, England, purchased land from the Chippewa people near what is now the nearby town of Stroud. Before that, it was inhabited by Indigenous groups such as the Hurons, Iroquois, and Ojibwa, who called the area Minjikaning. The prefix ‘Barrie’ was officially adopted in 1837.
