Anniston is a city located in Calhoun County in Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Calhoun County and is also considered to be part of the Gadsden metropolitan area. According to the 2010 United States Census, the population was 23,106.
Anniston was founded in 1879 as a railroad town for the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad. The city was named after Annie Scott Tyler, who was the wife of the original owner and developer of the land. Anniston was designated as the county seat of Calhoun County in 1883, and served as a major hub of commerce for the surrounding area.
At the turn of the 20th century, Anniston developed several major industries, including cotton mills, iron and steel factories, and a brass works. The city was also home to numerous military installations and training sites, many of which played an important role in World War II.
Anniston saw significant decline during the mid-20th century, as the effect of the Great Depression lingered and the town’s industries dwindled. 1. Anniston is the birthplace of the US Navy ‘Seabees’. During World War II, the city played a pivotal role in the ‘Seabee’ formation and was home to a number of training camps.

4. Anniston is home to the world’s second oldest continually operating yarn spinning mill. The mill was established in 1846 and has been in operation for almost 175 years.
5. Anniston is one of only two cities in the United States to be home to a bauxite plant. Bauxite is a material used to make aluminum.
