Alabaster is a city located in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. The city is known for its white limestone quarried. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 30,352. Alabaster is a suburb of Birmingham, and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city has a long and interesting history. It was first inhabited by Native Americans of the Creek Nation who referred to the city as “Talisi”, which translates to “Old Town”. In the early 19th century, settlers from the area around Florence made a permanent home in Alabaster, and the city was officially incorporated in 1953. The town began to grow after the completion of the Bibb Graves Bridge in 1958, which spans the nearby Cahaba River and connected Alabaster to the greater Birmingham region.
