History & Information About Wollongong City

Wollongong is a city located near the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is the third largest city in the state and the tenth largest in Australia. Wollongong has a population of over 295,000 people and is situated within the Illawarra region, which consists of five local government areas – Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Wingecarribee and Shoalhaven.

Wollongong was originally inhabited by the Dharawal Aboriginal people, but the city was founded in 1815 by the first surveyed European settler pioneers, Charles Throsby and William Charles Wentworth. The city was named Five Islands but was changed to Wollongong in 1834 for the Indian term for ‘sound of the sea’.

The first industry in the area was whaling, but with the arrival of the railway in 1887, Wollongong developed into an industrial center. To this day, it is now the world’s largest steel-producing region and the largest regional center in Australia.
