History & Information of Tucker, GA

Tucker is an unincorporated community in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, located on 43acre of land at the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway, Lavista Road and Hugh Howell Road, and near Northlake Mall. In the 1930s, the community was founded and given the name “Main Street,” however, the name was quickly changed to “Tucker” since the post office did not accept mail with the name of Main Street.

The city of Tucker was named after a landowner in the area, Benjamin Tucker. In 1941, the area acquired its first elementary school, Kittredge Elementary, and soon after, the community’s only high school, Tucker High School. Today, the community contains two public parks, two public libraries, two fire stations, two churches, and an elementary school.

Tucker’s early economy was bolstered by the Tucker train depot, which served as a stop on Southern Railroad’s route from Atlanta to Augusta. With the arrival of the automobile and the increased availability of major highways, the train station closed in the mid-20th century. By the 1970s, the area experienced rapid development and by the 1980s had grown into a true suburb of Atlanta.

In 2000, the city of Tucker was officially incorporated, becoming the city of Tucker and the first new municipality in DeKalb County since the city of Chamblee in 1908. Today, Tucker is home to more than 30,000 residents.
