It is the oldest permanent settlement in the province of Quebec, established in 1634 by the fur trading Roberval Expedition. In 1724 it became a seignory, granting land rights to an area of 100,000 acres. In the 19th century, the city was a major centre for the lumber, paper, and grain-export industries.

In the 1950s, it also began to see increased growth because of manufacturing in the chemical, textile, metals, and automotive sectors.
