Tamworth is an English historic market town and civil parish in Staffordshire, England, located in the north west of the county, equidistant from the cities of Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent.

The area is known for its associations with the legendary figure of Hereward the Wake, who is believed to have held out against the Norman invaders at the Siege of Tamworth here in 1067, later becoming the first Earl of Mercia. Tamworth was historically divided between Warwickshire and Staffordshire until 1889 when the boundary of Staffordshire was extended to include the area.

Today, the city is a popular tourist destination for its many retail outlets, entertainment venues, local attractions and nearby National Forest parks. The town continued to thrive in the Middle Ages and in 1467 it was awarded a second royal charter by King Edward IV. In 1547 Tamworth Castle was destroyed during the English Civil War and in 1643 the town was the site of a major battle during the first Civil War. It recovered from the conflict however and continued to thrive into the 19th century.

In the 21st century Tamworth is a thriving, modern market town, home to a number of businesses, leisure and retail venues and attractions.
