How to Make California Roll Sushi

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Nori (seaweed) sheets
  • Imitation crab sticks, sliced in half
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • Cucumber, julienned
  • Soy sauce, for dipping
  • Wasabi and pickled ginger (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then cook according to package instructions.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Set aside to cool.
  3. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
  4. Place a nori sheet on a sushi mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands and spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a small border at the top.
  5. Arrange the crab, avocado, and cucumber in a line across the center of the rice.
  6. Using the sushi mat, roll the nori and rice over the filling, applying gentle pressure to create a tight roll.
  7. Moisten the top border of the nori sheet with a little water and press to seal the roll.
  8. Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
  9. Serve the California roll sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
